What is the procedure?

Breast augmentation with implants is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. This cosmetic surgery involves the insertion of silicone or saline implants into the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscles. Consultation

The journey typically begins with a private consultation with our breast surgeon at Boston Center for Plastic Surgery. During this initial meeting, you will discuss your cosmetic goals, medical history, and the options available to you.

Anesthesia

Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, ensuring you remain comfortable throughout the procedure.

Incisions

The surgeon will make an incision to create a pocket for the implant. Incisions can be made in several locations, such as under the breast crease (inframammary), around the areola (periareolar), or in the armpit (transaxillary). The choice of incision depends on factors like implant type, placement, and scarring preferences.

Implant placement

There are two primary locations for implant placement: subglandular (above the chest muscle) and submuscular (under the chest muscle). The surgeon will determine the best placement for you based on your anatomy and goals.

The chosen implant is carefully inserted into the breast pocket created in the previous step. Silicone and saline implants are options for the patient.

Closing incisions

The surgeon closes the incisions with sutures and may apply skin adhesive or surgical tape to minimize scarring.

Returning home

After the procedure, you will be closely monitored in a recovery area until you wake up from anesthesia. You'll need another adult to drive you home.
