The quest for the fountain of youth is a popular trope in literature for a reason. A desire to look and feel your best is human nature. It literally comes down to biology. Appearing more vital and youthful signals health and good genes. Aging, however, is inevitable. Furthermore, feeling like you are in a constant fight with Father Time can be exhausting. Luckily, Boston Center for Plastic Surgery has long been at the forefront of embracing non-surgical procedures that deliver effective, natural-looking rejuvenation. A facelift may be the gold standard for lifting loose skin and turning-back-the-clock, but not every patient needs or wants this level of intervention. Aging gracefully without surgery is about preserving your skin quality and maintaining facial balance. This entails evolving care over time versus overcorrecting.

20’s - Don’t Underestimate the Power of Good Skincare

As a Board-Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon, I can tell you with full certainty that good skincare is one of the most powerful tools for looking your best for as long as possible. And the earlier that you embrace an appropriate skincare routine for your needs, the better. So for my patients in their 20’s, my focus is on prevention. The easiest way to rejuvenate your face is to avoid those things that may accelerate skin aging such as time spent in the sun. This is why my number one tip for looking young is daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30. There are great options out there at all price points from over-the-counter (OTC) to medical- grade. The important thing is to choose one that you’ll actually use. Many patients, particularly men, do not like the look and feel of a white lotion which is why
something like EltaMD UV Clear is ideal. In addition to adopting a daily sunscreen routine, my other top picks for prevention include:

• Medical-grade skincare
• Lasers or IPL
• Neurotoxin injected conservatively

Many of my younger patients get their skincare tips from social media. This can be dangerous. Oftentimes, people are applying too many products and/or the wrong products for their needs and damaging their skin. I strongly suggest that you schedule an in-person consultation with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon or Dermatologist in your area in order to be assessed in person.

Aging Gracefully in Your 30’s & 40’s is About Volume & Collagen

No two people age at the same rate, not even identical twins. Genetics is a factor, but so are lifestyle choices. This is why it can be hard to discuss a definitive rejuvenation plan as it has to be personalized to your anatomy and needs. However, most patients in their 30’s are going to experience an uptick in fine lines and wrinkles, and some minor volume loss. This decade is about early maintenance with:

• Neurotoxins
• Subtle dermal fillers
• Collagen stimulating treatments

For the latter, one of my favorite procedures is microneedling. When performed correctly, it is safe, effective and very adaptable as we offer a wide range of intensities starting with the SkinPen®, which can be done on your lunch hour, to
MatrixRF® and beyond. As the number of candles on your cake head into the 40 something range, my focus shifts towards correction and preservation. This often means layering appropriate non-surgical procedures to improve collagen loss and skin texture changes such as:

• Injectables
• Skin-tightening technologies
• Lasers

Focus in 50’s & 60’s is on Restoration & Refinement

Once you reach your 50’s, you are definitely going to notice some structural changes in the face no matter how great your lifestyle choices. This is the decade of restoration. I am looking for those procedures that will stimulate your own body to produce more collagen, which is like the support beams of a house. This may include a microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) procedure such as Profound®, or a more intense laser procedure such as Fraxel®. In addition to your continued injectables regime, I will also be looking for the right procedure to improve your skin texture as this is also the age when damage from the sun and other environmental factors really makes itself known. As a patient moves into his or her 60’s and beyond, aging gracefully becomes more about refinement and longevity. Achieving this requires a combination of conservative treatments, advanced skincare and a good attitude. I always tell patients that a smile is one of the best anti-agers out there.
