A breast augmentation, in the hands of an experienced breast surgeon, such as myself, is typically a safe, straightforward procedure that can pack a serious punch. By creating or restoring proper proportion between the upper and lower halves of your body, an appropriate sized breast implant may revitalize your entire torso, making your waist look smaller and your abdomen appear longer and leaner.

But the benefits of improving the size and shape of your breasts extend beyond just the physical. Patients who were born with a lack of volume tell me how they feel more confident and comfortable in their skin after a breast augmentation. And those who’ve maybe lost volume due to weight loss and/or pregnancy talk about how their breast implants make them feel like themselves again. For these reasons and many others, breast augmentation surgery is still the most popular aesthetic procedure in the world.

Is There a Right Age for Breast Implants?

Social media has had a huge impact on my practice. Patients come in to discuss body contouring armed with way more knowledge about their procedures of interest. This can be a good thing. However, all of this information can also be confusing. If every person that you’ve seen on Instagram raving about their fabulous new breasts is in their 20’s or early 30’s and you are not, does this mean that you are too old for a breast augmentation? The simple answer is “No”. Despite our society’s obsession with age, the number of candles on your birthday cake are much less important when it comes to achieving an exemplary breast surgery result than:

  • Overall health
  • Skin quality
  • Tissue support

This is why it is imperative to schedule an in-person consultation with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, such as myself, who specializes in breast surgery.

Breast Augmentation Consultation in Boston

During our meeting, I will really listen to what bothers you about your appearance. I will ask detailed questions about your medical history, family history, lifestyle and any prior procedures you may have had as well as how your body reacted. Then, I will conduct a thorough physical exam to assess:

  • Native breast volume
  • Skin tone & texture
  • Nipple position in relation to the inframammary fold
  • Sagging skin & tissues, if any

It is incredibly common for a patient to come in thinking that she needs X when she will actually need Y to achieve her goals. Your anatomy is unique. Furthermore, for any procedure to be effective, it must be the right one for your individual body and lifestyle.

Goal of Breast Augmentation by Decade

My personal practice philosophy is to deliver a natural looking, long lasting result regardless of your age. During your consultation, I will devise a treatment plan that includes the range of breast implants that will best create the right size and shape breast for your body. The goal is to restore proper proportion throughout the torso. Choosing breast implants that your skin and tissues can actually support is how we create long-term stability.

While the above are universal, there are certain factors to consider by decade. These are generalizations as some patients’ skin and tissues are going to be healthier than others depending on lifestyle choices such as:

  • Weight gain/loss
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Menopause

Collagen and elastin levels, which are the fountain of youth, diminish every year after 25 so patients in their 40’s are probably going to be exhibiting some mild skin laxity and post-pregnancy changes if relevant. In some cases, a breast implant alone can rejuvenate the torso. However, in patients with a more severe degree of looseness in the skin and tissues, I may recommend a breast implant with a breast lift. For those in their 50’s, the tissues are likely thinner with reduced elasticity so careful sizing is imperative. There may also be a need for additional structural support from an STS mesh.

I even perform successful breast augmentations on healthy, motivated patients in their 60’s. In these cases, I do typically combine a breast implant with a breast lift in order to restore nipple position to the center of the chest. All of these options will be discussed with you in detail during your consultation.
