Facial aging is universal. However, no two faces are going to age at exactly the same rate. Genetics certainly play their part in terms of the speed at which your skin and tissues start to show your actual age, but so do lifestyle choices. We’ve all seen the photos online of twins where the one who smoked looks about 10-15 years older than the one who did not. Proper skincare, a healthy diet and daily sunscreen use can definitely aid in prolonging your youthful looking countenance, but Father Time eventually catches up with us all. The point at which the signs of aging become bothersome is also personal. You may have started with Botox® and dermal fillers in your 30’s and perhaps added in lasers and microneedling in your 40’s to improve skin tone and texture. But by 50, most patients are noticing some moderate to severe sagging in the skin and tissues of the lower face and brow. In addition, your eyes may not be as “perky" as you’d like. Here are some of the best facial rejuvenation procedures for patients over 50.
Deep Plane Facelift in Boston
The inevitability of sagging skin comes down to biology. Collagen and elastin are the body’s way of keeping your skin looking plump, taut and youthful. Unfortunately, the body produces about 1% less of both every year after about 25. The end result may be:
• Fine lines & wrinkles
• Deeper wrinkles across brow
• “Jowling”
• Lack of definition at chin/neck juncture
• Horizontal and/or vertical lines on neck
• Sagging skin in upper eyelid
• Visible fat pads in lower eyelid
My go-to procedure for lifting sagging skin and tissues in the face of a 50+ patient is a deep plane facelift. This cutting-edge technique allows me to deliver powerful facial rejuvenation in a completely natural looking way. Since I’m working in the deeper layers of your tissue, there is no weird pulling on the surface of the skin. The end result is you, only better.
Brow Lift
A common misperception about a facelift procedure is that it encompasses the entire face when it really only addresses the lower 2/3. For some, this may be enough. Others, however, may be annoyed by a “heavy” appearance in the brow. This can manifest as a flattening out of the upper eyes. Combining a brow lift with a deep plane facelift enables me to rejuvenate your entire face. During your initial consultation, I will perform an in-depth physical exam in order to determine the exact right treatment plan for your needs. My brow lift results, like all of my work, are incredibly natural looking. I want you to look rested, never surprised.
Deep Plane Neck Lift for Patients Over 50
Since aging after 50 is rarely confined to the face, I will typically combine some form of a facelift with a deep plane neck lift. Your neck is an absolute workhorse that, until recently, was often overlooked. However, our current life of social media and Zoom has brought the neck firmly into the spotlight. Furthermore, all that bending over to look at your screen is not helping the situation. Some of the earliest signs of aging may appear first on your neck as the skin is much thinner here and, as mentioned, your neck moves a lot. Less robust skin and tissues can manifest as horizontal creases, vertical lines and a lack of definition at the chin/neck juncture. The latter is of particular concern for men as the masculine ideal is a crisp, defined jawline. A deep plane neck lift allows me to restore a more youthful appearance to your skin and tissues as well as address muscle laxity, if present.
Upper and/or Lower Eyelid Surgery
The last common treatment area for patients over 50 is the eyes. A blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids or both. Upper eyelid surgery generally entails an incision within the crease of your eye through which I lift and excise any loose skin. This is ideal for patients with “hooded” upper eyelids that may be making you look and feel perpetually tired. A lower blepharoplasty can have a number of moving parts allowing me to lift and excise loose skin, remove and/or reposition a prominent fad pad and add volume to hallows to improve dark circles. Again, all of these options will be discussed with you in detail during your initial consultation. My goal is for you to not just look better, but actually feel like yourself again.
