It is human nature to want to save time. Our minds are hardwired for efficiency as it frees up the schedule for the things that are more important. This may reduce stress and increase overall happiness. So, it makes sense that more and more patients are coming in asking about combination body contouring procedures. The internet has opened up a world of eduction opportunities for potential patients on their aesthetic procedure of choice which is fantastic. However, for any procedure to be safe and effective, it has to be the right one for your individual anatomy, desired outcome and lifestyle. Furthermore, saving time is only one of the many benefits of a combination procedure. Here are some other things to consider.
Body Contouring Consultation
Scheduling an in-person consultation with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, such as myself, who specializes in body contouring is the probably the single best thing you can do to ensure a great outcome. During our meeting, I will listen attentively to what is making you unhappy with your body. I will ask a lot of questions about your medical history, family history, any prior procedures as well as how your body recovered. I will then perform an in-depth physical exam to assess one or more of the following:
- Overall skin tone & texture
- Areas of excess fat
- Degree of unwanted fat
- Muscle laxity, if any
- Nipple position in relation to the inframammary fold
- Native breast volume
- Health of breast implants
- Degree of skin laxity following pregnancy and/or weight loss
Together, we will discuss the best treatment plan for safely achieving your desired outcome that also suits your lifestyle.
Benefits of a Combination Procedure
The potential benefits of a combination procedure include:
- Single recovery period
- One anesthesia event
- More balanced aesthetic result
While the first two often get the lion’s share of media and thus patient attention, the latter is truly my focus. Many areas of the body work in tandem which is why I always have and always will take a 360° approach with any body contouring patient. However, candidate selection for a combination procedure is going to depend on your:
- Overall health
- Unique anatomy
- Total surgical time of combined procedures
- Safety
I will never compromise your safety for efficiency. Sometimes, combining two procedures will require more time in the operating room (OR) than I feel is safe. When this happens, I will recommend staging the procedures. All of this will be discussed with you in detail during your initial consultation.
Most Popular Combination Body Contouring Procedures in Boston
In my Boston area offices, the most popular body contouring procedures are:
- Tummy Tuck & Liposuction
- Breast Implant Exchange or Augmentation & Breast Lift
- Liposuction across multiple areas
- Post-Pregnancy and/or Weight Loss Body Contouring
As mentioned, certain areas of the body work together. A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is the gold standard for addressing skin and muscle laxity in your abdomen, but we don’t want to forget about the sides and back of your body which may also have areas of excess fat that will not suit your new, slimmer torso. The same theory applies with a breast implant exchange or augmentation and a breast lift. The first will address volume, but there may also be a need to lift your nipple back to the center of your chest. A combination procedure can be an ideal way to do more than one thing at once assuming that it is safe for us to do so.
