We are living in an era of “chasing the like”. If you spend any time online, it can feel as if the right choice or action always comes down to a popularity contest. I think this is one of the reasons why a very common question that I hear from potential breast augmentation patients is: “What is the most popular breast implant?”. But here’s the thing to know — implant selection is a highly individualized process. The best way to achieve an exemplary, long-lasting result is to find the range of implants that will suit your unique anatomy, desired outcome and lifestyle. So while the web can be a very nice option for educating yourself on the various breast augmentation options, it is in no way a substitute for scheduling an in-person consultation with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, such as myself, who has extensive experience in breast surgery. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to choosing a breast implant.
Why Schedule an In-Person Breast Augmentation Consultation?
There is so much information these days about a breast augmentation available at your fingertips that some patients don’t see the need to book an in-person consultation. Personally, I think it’s critical. During our meeting, I will listen closely to what you don’t like about your body contour. Oftentimes, a patient may think she needs X when she actually needs Y. Though the breast augmentation procedure is typically pretty straightforward, it is not simple. Choosing a range of implants that will be right for you requires me to evaluate your:
- Chest width
- Tissue quality
- Lifestyle
- Aesthetic goals
So, a great result truly sits at the crossroad between intense technical knowhow and a keen artistic eye. Furthermore, my many years of experience placing all of the different breast implants allows me to really understand the nuances of each one as no two manufacturers are alike. Meeting you in person not only allows me to assess you physically, but it also gives us the opportunity to look through photos of breasts that you like so that we can land on the appropriate “look” that you desire. Armed with all of this information, I can then develop a treatment plan.
Lifestyle & Breast Implants
If you’ve read any plastic surgeon’s website or blog, lifestyle is something that comes up quite frequently. But what does it mean when it comes to choosing a breast implant? Let’s say, for example, that you are physically very active. Maybe you’re a marathon runner or an intense weight lifter. Chances are that if this description fits, you are probably on the low side when it comes to body fat. This could affect what type of implant we place, silicone gel or saline, as well as where, above or below the muscle. Generally, I prefer a silicone gel breast implant placed below the muscle. However, with very thin and/or athletic patients, this may not be the ideal choice. Furthermore, I may recommend that we add some fat grafting to the breast in addition to the implant in order to provide further camouflage.
Goal of Breast Augmentation in Boston
My goal with each breast augmentation is to create the result that will look seamless on your body, enhancing your shape without overwhelming your natural proportion. One of the things that can be confusing for patients when it comes to body contouring is that, at the end of day, it isn’t so much about creating bigger breasts as it is about creating breasts that balance and restore your proper body proportion. Perhaps you are someone who was born with breasts that are slightly too small for your frame. For others, pregnancy and breastfeeding may have left you with deflated breasts. When the top 1/3 of the torso doesn’t balance out the bottom 1/3, it can make your abdomen and waist appear fuller. And I don’t know anyone who desires this look! The proper breast implant has the power to literally transform your entire torso while also making you feel more confident and vital.
