What Are Breast Implants?

Breast implants are medical-grade devices placed beneath the breast tissue or chest muscle to enhance breast size, shape, or symmetry. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States.

Implants come in two primary fill types:

  • Silicone gel implants: Filled with a cohesive silicone gel that closely mimics the feel of natural breast tissue.
  • Saline implants: Filled with sterile saltwater, offering adjustability and a smaller incision size.

Both are FDA-approved and have strong safety profiles when placed by a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Implant Brands We Offer

At Boston Center for Plastic Surgery, we work with three leading implant manufacturers:

  • Motiva: Known for their ultra-cohesive silicone gel and progressive gel technology, Motiva implants offer a highly natural look and feel with a low complication profile
  • Mentor: A trusted, FDA-approved implant line offering a wide range of shapes, sizes, and profiles to accommodate diverse patient goals
  • Natrelle: Allergan's flagship line, available in both saline and silicone, with options ranging from round to anatomical (teardrop) shapes

Your surgeon at Boston Center for Plastic Surgery will recommend the best brand and style based on your body type, tissue characteristics, and desired outcome.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Are in good overall health
  • Have realistic expectations about your results
  • Are bothered by the size, shape, or symmetry of your breasts
  • Have fully developed breasts (typically age 18+ for saline, 22+ for silicone)
Are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
