The chin plays a very important role in facial symmetry as it provides an anchor for the entire face. If you are born with a "weak" or recessed chin, it can throw off the balance among the rest of your features. Aesthetically, this may not be your ideal look which could be making you feel self-conscious. A chin implant may be an effective stand-alone procedure for improving the projection of your chin. But no facial feature exists in isolation so a chin implant can also dramatically enhance the results of a rhinoplasty or neck lift. Deciding whether or not any of these options are right for you is not the job of the internet. Social media and the web are a great place to educate yourself on your aesthetic options, but they are never a replacement for an in-person consultation with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon such as myself.
Chin Implant Consultation in Boston
Assessing whether or not a chin augmentation with a chin implant is the best procedure for you is going to depend on your individual anatomy, desired outcome and lifestyle. During our meeting, I will listen to what it is that bothers you about your appearance. We will discuss, in detail, your medical history, family history, lifestyle, and any prior procedures you may have had, aesthetic or not, as well as how your body responded. I will then conduct a thorough physical exam to assess your:
- Skin tone & texture
- Relationship between the chin, jawline & other facial features
- Delineation at chin/neck juncture
- Sagging tissues on the neck, if any
- Size, shape & proportion of nose
Together, we will discuss the best facial rejuvenation treatment plan for your specific needs.
Ideal Patient for a Chin Implant
The ideal patient for chin rejuvenation with a chin implant, either on its own or in conjunction with a rhinoplasty or neck lift, is any man or woman in good overall health who is bothered by the appearance of their chin. As mentioned, some patients have a weak or recessed chin that is genetic. In these cases, age is not really a factor. However, Father Time can exact his toll on the skin and tissues of your face and neck. When the skin on the neck weakens and begins to sag, it may make any extra fat under the chin more visible and/or blur the "clean" delineation at the chin/neck juncture that the human eye naturally perceives as more lifted, vital and youthful. While a chin implant patient may be male or female, the aesthetic goals for each gender are slightly different. Men typically seek a stronger, more angular profile while women tend to desire subtle balance and refinement.
Why a Chin Implant Works Well With a Rhinoplasty or Neck Lift
If the chin is the anchor for the bottom third of your face then the nose is the focal point for the middle third. As such, these two facial features really work as a team which is why a chin implant and a rhinoplasty are often performed together. The same holds true for the chin and the neck. The latter has some of the most delicate tissues on the body which makes your neck one of the first areas to show the signs of age. This typically manifests as loose, sagging skin which can have an adverse affect on the spot where you chin and neck meet. A chin implant may enhance your neck lift results by creating better jawline definition and improving the neck-to-chin angle. All of these options will be discussed with you in detail during our initial meetings so that you can make the informed decision that is best for you.
