A surgical body contouring procedure can be transformative not just physically but also emotionally. It is incredibly common for a breast augmentation patient to tell me afterwards how much more confident she feels in her skin, or for a mother to thank me for making her feel like herself again. There is real comfort and calm to be found in restoring your body to its proper proportion. However, some patients are reticent about a surgical procedure due to a fear that the recovery will be difficult. Specifically, many patients are worried about post-op swelling. Will it cause pain? And how fast will it resolve so that he or she can return to a normal routine are two of the most common questions that I hear. Here are a few thoughts on how to treat and prevent post-op swelling.

Can I Prevent Post-Op Swelling?

The most important thing to understand about post-op swelling is that it is a normal and expected part of your body’s healing process. It occurs as the body responds to trauma by increasing blood flow and fluid to your treatment area to support tissue repair. This is as true for a non-surgical procedure such as injectables as it is for a surgical procedure such as a tummy tuck. The latter is simply more intense as there is increased stress placed on your tissues. So, not only can you not prevent post-op swelling, but you wouldn’t want to. It’s literally a sign that your body is doing exactly what it is designed to do. However, while you may not be able to completely prevent swelling, it can be significantly minimized and well-managed with proper care before and after surgery.

Minimizing Post-Op Swelling Starts Before Surgery

Ensuring a great recovery with minimal post-op swelling should start weeks before we ever step foot into the operating room (OR). You want to set yourself up for success by doing everything that you can to lower inflammation in the body. This may include:

• Low sodium diet
• No alcohol
• Eliminate sugar and ultra-processed foods
• Stay hydrated
• Exercise regularly
• Embrace mind/body techniques like meditation
• Practice excellent sleep hygiene

The reason for starting early is that if your body is already in a state of stress before surgery then it will need to work harder to heal afterwards. Another critical step to improve your recovery is to make certain that you’ve reviewed your post-op instructions thoroughly. You want to make sure that you’ve purchased any products you are going to need, including prescription meds, and scheduled any post-op care that may be necessary such as:

• Housekeeper
• Dog walker
• Child care
• Food delivery

Your only job after surgery is to take care of yourself so that your body can do its thing and heal.

Other Tips to Reduce Post-Op Swelling

One of the interesting things about healing, however, is that it’s personal. Every patient heals at his or her own rate. All of the above tips can really help, but genetics are also a factor. I spend considerable time during our initial consultation and pre-op meetings going over your medical history as well as how you’ve recovered in the past from any procedure. This will allow us to establish a baseline for your body’s unique healing journey. I find that a patient is always going to be happier with his or her result if the expectations around recovery are realistic. So, what if you are one of those patients who will take longer to heal? Again, you are going to start treating your body with care and respect well before surgery in order to reduce inflammation. This will kick-start an exemplary healing process. After surgery, depending on your specific treatment plan, I may also recommend one or more of the following to further reduce any post-op swelling and speed up your recovery:

• Elevation
• Cold therapy
• Lymphatic drainage massage
• Hydration
• Low-sodium diet
• Light movement
• Appropriate prescription medications
• Supplements

All of this will be reviewed with you in detail during our initial meetings. The goal of myself and my team is to provide you with the specific support you need so that your recovery can be as fast and stress-free as possible.
