We are living in an era where facial rejuvenation is now openly discussed. Kris Jenner not only did nothing to hide the results of her most recent facelift, she proudly touted them all over the internet. Social media has really helped erase the shame that many used to feel about a desire for facial rejuvenation. But it has also raised questions. If your favorite influencer got a facelift at X age, does this mean that you should get one then as well? Many patients want to know the “rules” in regards to aesthetic surgery. For example, is 40 too early for a facelift? While I understand people’s desire for parameters, facial aging is completely individual, and age alone is never the deciding factor. Here are some things to think about when considering a facelift.
Facelift Consultation in Boston
Deciding whether or not you are ready for a facelift should always start with an inperson consultation with a Board-Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon, such as myself. While the internet is a great tool for research and education, this information is not specific to your anatomy. And that is where everything must begin. During our meeting, I will listen to what bothers you about your appearance. We will discuss your goals, lifestyle, medical history, family history, any prior procedures and how how your body recovered. I will then perform an in-depth physical exam to assess:
- Skin tone & texture
- Fine lines & wrinkles
- Volume loss in mid-face/cheeks
- Degree of “jowling” or loose, sagging skin in lower face
- Chin/neck juncture
- Muscle laxity in neck and/or banding
Together, we will discuss the best facial rejuvenation plan for achieving your goals that works for your lifestyle.
What Causes Facial Aging?
Some patients in their late 30’s to early 40’s are appropriate candidates for a facelift while others may not be ready for another decade or two. Why the discrepancy? As mentioned, facial aging is individual. There are a number underlying causes besides how many candles are on your birthday cake. Genetics is a big one. And while you have no control over the genetic lottery, many of the issues that accelerate skin and tissue aging come down to lifestyle choices such as:
- Smoking
- Time spent outdoors in the sun
- Living in or near a big city
- Healthful diet
- Hydration levels
- Consistent exercise routine
- Appropriate skincare regime
Embracing more healthful lifestyle choices can go a long way towards rejuvenating your skin and tissues. But at a certain point, you may look in the mirror and no longer feel as if your reflection looks like you. Then, it might be time to consider a facelift.
Benefits of a Facelift Earlier vs. Later
As a double Board-Certified Facial Plastic and Head & Neck Surgeon, I offer my Boston area patients the full range of facelift options including:
As discussed, the right time for a facelift is going to depend on your anatomy and needs, but there may be certain benefits to having a facelift earlier, rather than later. In general, your skin and tissues at 40 are going to be healthier and more able to bounce back than skin in your 60’s. The results are also going to be more subtle and preventative. We will be able to restore your youthful structure without producing a dramatic change, and these results can be long-lasting, particularly with a deep plane facelift. But at the end of the day, the key to timing a facelift is always going to come down to anatomy, skin quality and goals, not your age.
