Procedure: Deep Plane Facelift

This patient is a 50s year old female who desired improvement of her cheeks, jowls, and wanted to restore her neck and jawline contour. She underwent comprehensive facial rejuvenation surgery with Dr. Sanan including a lateral brow lift, upper blepharoplasty, and a deep plane face & neck lift. What is the neck lift procedure?

During this procedure, your surgeon will make discreet incisions hidden beneath the chin and behind the ears. These incisions grant access to the underlying fat and muscle layers. Excess fat is removed using liposuction or direct excision while sagging skin is tightened and repositioned. The neck muscles (platysmal bands) are also tightened using internal sutures, refining the jawline.

Sutures are then used to close the incisions, followed by dressing application. The result is a smoother, more contoured appearance. At Boston Center for Plastic Surgery, we perform this procedure under local anesthesia or twilight sedation in our private, fully accredited surgical suite. The duration varies from one to three hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery.

What is the recovery time after a neck lift?

After the procedure, expect some discomfort, swelling, and bruising, which typically subside within two weeks. Prescription pain medication may be provided. Patients are advised to limit activity and avoid strenuous exercises, heavy lifting, and rigorous activities for the first two weeks. Wearing a compression garment or chin strap for a few days aids in natural healing and provides comfort. As the healing progresses, the newly contoured neck becomes more apparent.
