Woman consulting for a Mommy Makeover with Dr. Sean Doherty in Boston.

Mommy Makeover is something that you’ve probably heard about on social media.
It is a term to describe a combination of procedures that address the biggest
problem areas for women who’ve had children — the breasts and the abdomen.
But here’s the catch. A Mommy Makeover is not just for moms. A dissatisfaction
with the appearance of the mid-section and/or breasts is one of the more popular
reasons why a woman comes in to see me to discuss body contouring. While any
procedure must be tailored to your individual anatomy and needs, here are some
Mommy Makeover options to consider.

Tummy Tuck or Mini-Tummy Tuck in Boston
While a long, lean abdomen may be the ideal, many of us are not genetically
blessed with this look. Furthermore, any number of issues can adversely affect the
appearance of your abdomen. These include:
• Pregnancy
• Weight gain/loss
• Hormones
• Menopause
• Age
• Abdominal wall or core

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure to remove excess fat, tighten loose skin and
re-sculpt your abdomen so that it looks long and lean. There are two options when
it comes to an abdominoplasty:
• Full Tummy Tuck
• Mini Tummy Tuck

While the latter always sounds more appealing to my Boston area patients, very
few are actual candidates as a mini tummy tuck can only address skin and tissue
laxity that resides below the belly button. I pride myself on always being upfront
about what it’s going to actually take to achieve your desired outcome. Neither of
us want to waste your time or money on a procedure that isn’t right for your needs.

Breast Surgery Options with a Mommy Makeover
The breasts are another area of the body whose appearance can morph over time.
Hormonal changes, weight gain and weight loss may all take their toll on the skin
and tissues of your breasts. Again, the right breast surgery procedure is going to
depend on your unique anatomy, needs and goals. Options include:
• Breast Augmentation
• Fat Grating to the Breast
• Breast Lift
• Mastopexy Augmentation
• Breast Reduction
For women with only a mild to moderate degree of skin laxity and/or volume loss,
a breast augmentation with an appropriate sized breast implant could be a great
option. Those with a more severe degree of sagging in the breasts may be a better
candidate for a breast lift either on its own, or with an implant and/or fat grafting to
the breast for additional volume. The best way to tell whether or not you have a
higher degree of tissue laxity is nipple position. If your nipples rest at or below the
inframammary fold, which is the crease beneath your breasts, you are most likely
going to do best with a breast lift.
