Many people think that summer skin damage only shows up as a sunburn. But the adverse effects of UV exposure typically begin beneath the surface of your skin long before they become visible to the human eye as sun spots, fine lines and pigmentation, for example. Wearing a broad spectrum daily sunscreen of at least SPF 30 is one of the best things that you can do to keep your skin looking smooth, plump and more youthful. However, the tricky thing with UV rays is that unless you live in a cave, your skin is absorbing some degree of UVA and UVB light. There are additional steps, besides daily sunscreen, that you can take to decrease summer skin damage such as limiting your time outdoors, wearing UPF clothing and committing to a wide brim hat. But there are also a wide array of professional treatments that I perform that can repair summer skin damage and get your skin back to good health. The right one is going to depend on your individual needs which is why I always encourage patients to schedule an in-person consultation.

Skin Care Consultation in Boston

Many patients today rely entirely on Instagram and TikTok for their skincare recommendations. While the internet can be a great resource for educating yourself on options, it is also not discerning. Your skin is unique. The underlying cause of your summer skin damage is influenced by your genetics and lifestyle choices such as:

  • Skincare
  • Living in or near a big city
  • Hormones
  • Age
  • Diet & exercise regime
  • Hydration levels

Furthermore, your skin’s needs can change by the season as heat and/or dry air conditioning can be factors. During our in-person consultation, I will ask a lot of questions about your lifestyle, desired outcome, ability to tolerate downtime, willingness to commit to a skincare routine, any prior procedures you may have had as well as how your skin recovered. I will then conduct a physical exam to assess:

  • Presence & location of clogged pores
  • Acne
  • Pore size
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Areas of dryness, if any
  • Pigmentation
  • Rough skin texture
  • Fine lines & wrinkles

Together, we will discuss the best treatment plan for restoring your healthy looking glow.

Treatments to Repair Summer Skin Damage

At Boston Center for Plastic Surgery, our goal is to provide patients with the full range of rejuvenation options, both surgical and non-surgical. In terms of treatments for repairing summer skin damage, my first job is to assess the underlying drivers that are creating your less than ideal looking skin. Summer sun exposure can wreak havoc in a number of ways, contributing to:

  • Dry, dehydrated skin
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Pigmentation
  • Sun spots
  • Redness
  • Rough texture
  • Clogged pores
  • Accelerated signs of aging

During our consultation, I will identify your skin’s unique signs and concerns and then pick the treatment that will best address your needs. My go-to treatments for repairing and restoring a more healthy look to your skin include:

  • Hydrafacial
  • Glo2Facial
  • Chemical Peels
  • Dermaplanning
  • Customized skincare regime

So while it’s not ideal to get a sunburn ever, it’s nice to know that there are effective options for improving summer skin damage.
