Perfection is an elusive concept, despite what the internet may say. In many ways, it is the imprecations that make us human. However, as a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, it is my job to help you get as close to your ideal body contour as possible. In terms of the breasts, I often tell my Boston area patients to think of them as sisters, not twins. Some degree of breast asymmetry affects almost every woman. It’s estimated that up to 75% - 88% of the female population exhibit some degree of unevenness in breast size, shape or nipple position. For most, this difference is subtle while for others, it can be extreme. Regardless of where you fall on this spectrum, if you are bothered by the appearance of your breasts, there are surgical approaches for helping to correct your breast asymmetry. The right procedure for you is always going to depend on your unique anatomy, lifestyle and desired look.
Breast Surgery Consultation
If you are unhappy with the appearance of your breasts, my first suggestion is to schedule an in-person consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon in your area with an expertise in breast surgery. I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating that while the internet can be a great tool for researching body contouring options, it is not a replacement for being assessed in person. During our meeting, I will listen to what bothers you about your body contour. I will ask very in-depth questions about your medical history, family history, lifestyle, any prior procedures that you may have had, aesthetic or not, as well as how your body recovered. I will then conduct a physical exam to assess your:
• Native breast tissue
• Skin tone & texture
• Nipple position in relation to inframammary fold & between breasts
• Degree of sagging in skin & tissues, if any
Together, we will go over the best procedure or procedures for creating your ideal breast shape.
Breast Augmentation to Improve Breast Asymmetry in Boston
In patients who desire more breast volume and/or who exhibit a mild to moderate degree of asymmetry between the right and left breast, a breast augmentation with breast implants may be an effective procedure for improving breast asymmetry. In the breast that is smaller, I can place a slightly larger implant in order to “lift” the nipple so that it comes close to matching the other side. This can be a stand-alone procedure although I may combine it with fat grafting to the breast in order to improve shape. If you are someone who doesn’t like the idea of placing a foreign device, such as a breast implant, in your body and you only have a mild degree of asymmetry then fat grafting on its own may be an option. This will all be discussed with you in person during our initial meetings.
Breast Lift or Breast Reduction to Address More Severe Asymmetry
Patients with a more severe degree of breast asymmetry may be better candidates for a:
• Breast Lift
• Mastopexy Augmentation
• Breast Reduction
Again, the right choice for you is going to depend on your needs. Many women are adverse to the idea of a lift or reduction because they fear having a visible scar on their breasts. This is understandable. And while there is no way to lift and excise loose skin and tissues without leaving an incision line, scars on the breasts tend to heal extremely well. One of the reasons why I ask such probing questions when we first meet is to get a good idea of how your body recovers. Healing is individual and some patients are genetically inclined to develop raised scars more than others. If this is you, however, there are many, effective scar therapies treatments that we can utilize to help minimize any incision line. These include:
• Topical scar therapies
• Lasers
• Microneedling
I also pride myself on my precise surgical technique which places as little tension as possible on your skin as this is a big contributor to a more visible incision line.
It’s also critical that you follow all post-op instructions to the letter. You must give your body the time and support to heal to the best of its ability.
