Recovery is an integral component of any aesthetic procedure. You can see the most skilled plastic surgeon in the world, but if you rush your recovery and/or don't follow your post-op instructions carefully, it may mar your results at best, and threaten your health at worst. I spend considerable time during our initial consultation discussing any upcoming travel plans or big events that you may have so that we can create a treatment plan that best aligns with your lifestyle and goals. One of the common mistakes that I see with body contouring patients is scheduling surgery too close to an important event. There is a difference between feeling well enough to attend your 30th high school reunion, and being completely recovered from your procedure so that you look and feel your best. Swelling, in particular, can take longer to fully resolve than many realize and may be an impediment in terms of safe travel. Here is a brief overview of flying and travel restrictions after a cosmetic procedure.
Post-Op Air Travel Restrictions Keep You Safe
As a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, my number one goal is your safety. It makes zero sense to create a beautiful aesthetic result and then have you get on a plane before your swelling has subsided enough to allow you to travel safely. While procedures such as a breast augmentation, tummy tuck, liposuction and Mommy Makeover all have unique recovery timelines, no patient should travel without clearance from his or her plastic surgeon. This is really important. Air travel presents specific challenges during your recovery.
- Changes in cabin pressure
- Prolonged sitting
- Carrying luggage
These may all contribute to increased discomfort, but flying too soon after surgery may also result in:
- Severe swelling
- Wound rupture
- Blood clots
- Deep Vein Thrombosis
The latter two can even be deadly. Depending on your procedure of choice, I will recommend no air travel for anywhere from a week to several weeks. This will all be discussed with you in detail during our initial meetings.
Post-Op Travel Restrictions by Procedure in Boston
Any aesthetic procedure that I perform is individualized to your unique anatomy, lifestyle and desired outcome. This is as true for the surgery itself as it is for the recovery. Everyone heals at his or her own rate. I take a lot of time during our initial meetings asking questions about your medical history, family history, any prior procedures you may have had, aesthetic or otherwise, and how your body healed. My goal is to get a good sense of how your body copes with trauma so that we have a better idea of your healing timeline. Having said that, I also understand that patients want some idea of what's in store for them before even coming in for a consultation. So, here are some general guidelines for post-op travel restrictions by procedure:
- Breast Augmentation (1 week)
- Liposuction (1 week)
- Tummy Tuck (4-6 weeks)
If you are having a Mommy Makeover, which almost always includes some form of an abdominoplasty, plan on at least 4-6 weeks before stepping foot on a plane. And, as mentioned, you must always get cleared to fly by your plastic surgeon regardless of how long its been. In terms of scheduling a cosmetic procedure before any big event, I typically recommend that you plan your surgery several months in advance if possible so that you can look and feel your absolute best.
