A dissatisfaction with the appearance of the abdomen is the number one body concern for most people. Not only does the mid-section occupy a great deal of real estate on your torso, but there are also a lot of different factors that can adversely affect how it looks. Genetics play a role as do certain lifestyle choices. For women, pregnancy may take its toll on the skin, tissues and even the muscles of the abdomen (diastasis recti). Furthermore, the prevalence of GLP-1 weight loss drugs has had a huge impact on the number of men and women in the Boston area seeking a body contouring procedure. Losing those extra pounds is great for your overall health and sense of self, but it can result in unwanted loose skin. An abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is often an ideal option for patients with a moderate to severe amount of bothersome loose skin, weakened abdominal muscles and/or excess tissue that doesn't improve with changes in diet and exercise alone. Extremely effective, this is a robust procedure that is going to require a commitment in terms of downtime. This is why a good candidate for a tummy tuck is someone with not just the desire to rejuvenate their mid-section, but who also has the willingness and patience to devote the necessary time to recovery.

Tummy Tuck Consultation in Boston

If you are tired of not loving the appearance of your abdomen, schedule a consultation with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon with considerable experience in body contouring, such as myself, to be assessed in person. While the internet has become a valuable tool for patients in terms of researching aesthetic options, it does not know your unique body. During our meeting, I will listen to what it is that bothers you about your body contour. I will ask detailed questions into your family history, medical history, lifestyle, any prior procedures you may have had, aesthetic or not, and how your body recovered. Then, I will perform a physical exam to assess:

• Degree of skin laxity
• Location of loose skin
• Areas of excess fat
• Muscle laxity, if any

Together, we will discuss whether or not an abdominoplasty is the right choice for you. I am always very honest about what you can expect in terms of recovery. As mentioned, a tummy tuck can deliver serious rejuvenation to your mid-section. However, you must decide if your lifestyle and temperament can commit to the necessary downtime.

Abdominoplasty or Liposuction?

One of the most common questions that I see online or hear from a new patient is about the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction. Both are surgical procedures and the recovery from the latter is less intense, which is appealing to many patients. The real defining line between the two comes down to skin laxity. Liposuction only addresses excess fat — it cannot lift loose skin. Most patients who've gained and lost significant weight due to any of the following may find that liposuction alone is not enough:

• Having a baby
• Going on a weight loss drug
• Experiencing the hormonal shifts of age

If you fall into any of these categories then you will probably be better served with a tummy tuck. Unlike liposuction, an abdominoplasty allows me to address skin laxity, excess fat and repair your abdominal wall. The end result is a flatter, more toned appearance. The ideal candidate is someone who is typically close to his or her goal weight, in good overall health and who is looking for a long-term solution to improve abdominal contour and core support.
